Video Clips of JJ from Bossou, Guinea fishing for tools

with 2 comments

I just posted about JJ’s novel tool use, and I thought you may wanna see him actually fishing for ants. The authors of the paper provided videos of JJ using his tools. I’ve uploaded it to YouTube for your viewing pleasure.

  1. Does he do this where others can observe his behavior, or is this a solo act? Do members of this group go ant-fishing together at established locations, or is it generally an opportunistic and individual activity? I’m curious as to the potential for imitative transmission.

  2. Admin, not it seems like he has done this independently and has not done this in front of others where this behavior will be transmitted. That’s what the original paper said.

No other members of this group go ant-fishing, it seems like he has been the pioneer member that started it.

It will be really awesome to see how this behavior spreads and develops in this group from Bossou because it will provide a framework for understanding different how tool use behaviors have emerged in other chimp and great ape social groups.
