Clarifying the correlation between large testes and a promiscuous mating system: large testes are usually evidential of a high sperm production, which in turn usually means that males mate more often than strictly necessary for reproduction. In most species this indicates that there is "sperm competition" over fertile females. In species where males can monopolize mating access to females (e.g. gorillas), the males' testes are small, in species where monopolization is impossible (e.g. chimps) testes are big, and males try to ensure fathering offspring by mating often.
